Washingtonia Palm Trees

Washingtonia palms, comprising two species: Washingtonia robusta (Mexican Fan Palm) and Washingtonia filifera (California Fan Palm), are iconic and widely recognized palm trees native to the southwestern United States and northwest Mexico. These palms are characterized by their tall, slender trunks that can reach heights of 66 to 100 feet (20 to 30 meters), topped by a crown of large, fan-shaped leaves that can span 5 to 6.5 feet (1.5 to 2 meters) in diameter. The leaves are deeply divided into numerous segments, giving them a distinctive, bushy appearance. Washingtonia palms produce small, cream-colored flowers held in dense clusters that emerge from among the leaves, followed by small, round fruits that turn from green to black as they mature. These palms are highly tolerant of heat, drought, and a wide range of soil types, making them popular choices for urban landscapes, parks, and residential gardens in warm climates. Their striking silhouette and rapid growth rate contribute to their widespread use as ornamental trees, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of their surroundings.

Cold Hardiness:

Washington Palm Trees are reasonably cold hardy down to approximately 20° F. USDA plant hardiness zone 9a.
