Sago Palm Trees
Sago palms, scientifically known as Pseudophoenix sargentii, are distinctive palms native to the coastal scrublands and hammocks of Florida and the Bahamas. These palms are characterized by their slender, solitary trunks that grow up to 10 to 12 feet (3 to 3.6 meters) tall, adorned with prominent leaf scars and often covered in a grayish-brown fibrous material. The pinnate leaves are relatively short, typically reaching 5 to 10 feet (1.5 to 3 meters) in length, and are composed of numerous rigid, dark green leaflets arranged in a V-shape. Sago palms produce small clusters of creamy-white flowers, followed by small, bright red fruits that are about 0.6 inches (1.5 centimeters) in diameter. Known for their drought tolerance and ability to withstand coastal winds, Sago palms are valued in landscaping for their compact size and resilience in subtropical environments, where they add a touch of native Florida charm to gardens and public spaces.
Cold Hardiness:
Sago Palm Trees are reasonably cold hardy down to approximately 20° F. USDA plant hardiness zone 9 to 11.
