Bottle Palm Trees

The Bottle Palm (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis) is a distinctive and striking palm tree often found in Florida's landscapes. Native to the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean, this palm gets its name from its unique, swollen trunk that resembles the shape of a bottle. The thick, bulbous trunk is usually grayish-brown and can grow up to 2 feet in diameter, tapering off as it rises to support a small crown of arching fronds.

Bottle Palms are relatively small, typically reaching only 10 to 12 feet in height, making them an excellent choice for small gardens, patios, or as accent plants in larger landscapes. They thrive in Florida's warm, sunny climate and prefer well-drained soil. These palms are highly tolerant of salt, making them ideal for coastal areas, but they require protection from frost and cold temperatures.

The Bottle Palm has a slow growth rate, which adds to its appeal as a low-maintenance ornamental plant. Its feather-like fronds are green and glossy, with about four to six leaves forming a compact canopy. Because of their unique appearance and manageable size, Bottle Palms are popular in Florida for adding a tropical touch to both residential and commercial landscapes.

Cold Hardiness:

Bottle Palm Trees are cold hardy down to approximately 30° F. USDA plant hardiness zone 10a to 11.
